Various processors and interfaces, which are used in an imaging system hardware for development of a PC-based imaging system, are discussed. Firstly, camera should be selected on the basis of order of magnitude of images, area of application such as conveyor belts and cells, requirement of light needed for film acquisition, and suitable interfaces such as analog, LVDS, IEEE 1394, Camera Link™, and Gigabit Ethernet that determine image or video acquisition hardware. Analog frame grabbers that convert analog signal into digital still feature off-the-shelf video decoder chips for digitizing the color or monochrome video signal in NTSC/RS-170 format. Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) cameras are capable of transmission of data at rate of 1 Gbps over maximum distance of 100m and are connected to a standard Network Interface Card (NIC)to stream imaging data to computer memory. Imaging hardware such digital interface card or video processor should be selected based on camera hardware.
