Electroforming is one unique method to produce EDM electrode and the quality of electroformed layer will directly determine machining quality and electrode's service life. Choosing appropriate additive is a widely used approach to improve electrolyte and enhance electroformed layer's quality. In this paper, based on optimizing electrolyte and process parameters, rare earth oxide La2O3 which has special physical and chemical properties, is added into electrolyte, and then makes specimens and EDM electrode to observe the relationships between surface micro-morphology, surface roughness, surface hardness, wear resistance and amount of La2O3 in electrolyte. The results show that when PH=1, i=3A/dm2, T=40°C, Cl-80mg/L, adding 1.2g/L La2O3 to electrolyte, the electroformed copper exhibits compact surface micro-morphology with fine crystal grain, surface roughness reaches Ra0.14, surface hardness increases by 35% and relative wear rate reduces to 2.61% when used as EDM electrode.
