The use of tracking technology (electronic identifiers to track digital evidence left behind from the attacks) to apprehend a programmer charged with authoring the Melissa virus; as well as the perpetrators of the Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks that Yahoo! recently suffered,1 may have created a dangerous precedent for electronic privacy, according to legal experts.2 In the Yahoo! case, hunting down the hackers who launched the denial of serviceattacks against Web sites won't be easy. The attacks paralyzed popular sites like Yahoo!, eBay, Amazon, *** and ***. In the Melissa case, the perpetrator, 30, of Aberdeen, New Jersey, was arrested and arraigned in April, 1999, following a national man- hunt. According to New Jersey Attorney General's office, the perpetrator's arrest was made as a direct result of information provided by America Online, Inc. (AOL) through their use of electronic identifier technology. Let's look at some of this technology.
